Kadi is inspired by the beloved Kenyan card game Kadi and reimagined for the digital age. Whether you are a lifelong Kadi player or discovering the game for the first time, every match is a battle of timing, memory, and clever play. Chain cards together, force opponents to draw penalties, block attacks, change suits, and race to empty your hand before anyone else.

Objective

The goal of Kadi is simple: be the first player to get rid of all the cards in your hand. However, victory requires careful planning because special cards can reverse turns, force opponents to draw cards, skip turns, and change the active suit.

Before playing your final card, you must declare Kadi. Forgetting to call Kadi may result in penalties depending on the game mode.

Basic Gameplay

At the start of the game:

• Each player receives a hand of cards.
• One card is placed face up in the center to begin the discard pile.
• The remaining cards form the draw pile.
• Players take turns clockwise unless the direction is changed by special cards.

On your turn, you must:

• Play a valid card from your hand onto the discard pile.
• Or draw a card if no valid move is available.

A card is valid if it matches:

• The suit of the top card.
• The rank of the top card.
• A special card that can be played regardless of suit restrictions.

If multiple cards can be chained together, they may be played during the same turn according to the game's combination rules.

Card Combination Chains

One of the defining features of Kadi is the ability to chain cards together in a single turn.

Examples include:

• Playing multiple cards of the same rank.
• Extending attack combinations with additional penalty cards.
• Building defensive chains to avoid incoming penalties.

Well timed chains allow players to empty their hands quickly while putting tremendous pressure on opponents.

Special Cards

Ace spades (A♠️)

The Ace is a powerful control card.

• Can often be used to request a specific suit.
• Allows players to adapt their strategy and escape difficult situations.
• Frequently changes the flow of the game.

Two (2)

Attack Card

• Forces the next player to draw cards.
• Attack cards may be stacked.
• The penalty grows as more attack cards are added to the chain.
• The targeted player must continue the chain or accept the accumulated penalty.

Three (3)

Heavy Attack Card

• Forces a larger draw penalty than a standard attack card.
• Can be stacked with compatible attack cards.
• Creates dangerous penalty chains capable of dramatically increasing an opponent's hand size.

Jump (J)

Skip Card

• Causes the next player's turn to be skipped.
• Multiple skip cards can be chained together.
• Useful for maintaining momentum and denying opponents opportunities to play.

Ace (A)

Suit Request Card

• Allows the player to choose the next active suit.
• Excellent for escaping unfavorable situations.
• Can be used offensively to trap opponents who lack the requested suit.

King (K)

Direction Control Card

• Reverses the direction of play.
• In two player matches, it may effectively grant an immediate return turn depending on house rules.
• Useful for redirecting attacks and controlling turn order.

Joker

Ultimate Wild Card

• Can be played regardless of suit.
• Usually carries severe penalties or powerful effects.
• Creates high pressure situations that can instantly change the outcome of a match.

Defending Against Attacks

When targeted by a draw penalty:

• Play an appropriate defensive or matching attack card to continue the chain.
• Pass the accumulated penalty to the next player.
• If unable to respond, draw all accumulated penalty cards and lose your turn.

Large attack chains can quickly become game changing, making defensive planning essential.

Calling Kadi

When you have only one card remaining:

• You must declare Kadi before playing your final card.
• This warns other players that you are close to victory.
• Forgetting to call Kadi may result in a penalty depending on the selected ruleset.

Calling Kadi at the right moment creates some of the most exciting and tense moments in the game.

Winning the Game

You win when:

• You successfully play your final card.
• Any required Kadi declaration has been made.
• No unresolved penalties remain against you.

The first player to meet these conditions is declared the winner.
